ABOUT FIL-GRAD

Filipino Graduation, also known as Fil-Grad, at San Francisco State University has become a beloved tradition within the community that grows out of rich history of the campus. FilGrad puts the spotlight on Filipinos who have reached the requirements to receive a degree at any level of higher education. Unlike any other commencement ceremony, FilGrad is put together by the graduates themselves and in turn is a journey. The bond between the students to reach this momentous day makes it an accomplishment on its own.

The rate of Filipino college graduates in the United States is far different from that of in the Philippines. Only half of those who enter as freshman at a university of higher education receive a college degree. Surrounded by family, friends, and loved ones, these students who participate in Fil-Grad are in turn thanking those around them for the help, support, love and inspiration they received in their lives.

This Sunday, May 20th, come celebrate the accomplishments of our students. They have worked so hard over the past few year. Let us show them the love and appreciation for the amazing achievements. Fil-Grad will take place in the Gymnasium at San Francisco State University. There is a map below to help you with getting through campus. The ceremony begins at 9am and will end at 11am. Graduates will arrive earlier for dress rehearsal. Doors open at 8am for those families who would like to get good seats. Please have your ticket ready when you enter. If you do not have one, please ask your graduate. There will also be a will call if necessary.

For any other questions, please ask your graduate. We will do our best to put as much information here.

See you at the Graduation!

The story of “The Lorax” by Dr. Suess explores the human greed resulting in the destruction of nature. We wanted to extend this idea for our PEP Community Show in ways that is relevant to our community. The “PEProx” character is parallel to the Lorax character, which “speaks for the trees, for the trees have no tongues.” Our work in the classroom and local community is symbolic of Lorax as the protector, nurturer, and advocate for those who are disempowered in our society today: the children (governmental attack on education and social services, and social toxins we experience everyday). This is also the primary reason that we purposely chose a children’s story via theater. We want this story to be centered in the imagination and playfulness of children as a symbol of hope for the future.

This year marks a first: the Community Service Learning Program recognizes that learning need not be tied to semester-long courses, but can occur whenever student groups collectively decide to work in the surrounding community, even if only for a day.
1. Chi Rho Omicron, a Filipino-American cultural based SF State fraternity that has partnered with Project Pearls, a nonprofit organization that assists underprivileged, malnourished children in the Philippines, where many children survive by scavenging for food thrown into dumpsters. This past December, Chi Rho members hosted a guided caroling tour around South San Francisco neighborhoods, then sang at two parks while collecting canned food donations for Project Pearls. Their hope is to make this an annual event that will raise awareness about global hunger.

In an effort to host the graduation ceremony this year, the Filgraduates will be hosting a series of fundraisers until their graduation date. Please join them and support, and have a great time.

This exhibit was created and designed by students from Asian American Studies 308: Asian American Photographic Explorations, which is taught at San Francisco State University by Prof. Valerie Soe. Each student chose one Asian American person who is important in their lives and made a photographic tribute to that person. Each student was free to select the form of the project and to use whatever materials they saw fit, as long as it integrated the photographic medium.

Throughout the semester the class has looked at artists’ books, prints, installations, and multimedia projects that utilize photography as an expressive medium. The class has seen the ways that Asian American artists have used photography as a means of creative expression, as a reflection of the Asian American community, and as a tool for social change. The work in this show reflects the many ways that Asian Americans use photography for art and activism.
